  • ‘The mass of man will live lives in quiet desperation, and go to the grave with their song still inside them.’ -Henry David Thoreau .. .. I encountered this quote on two separate occasions today - first from my pastor and later from a great spiritual light in my life - my friend, @jeshderox. This wasn’t the first time I’d heard the quote, but today those words demanded more of my attention. If desperation is commonplace, does it stem from our own actual inadequacies, or from a fear of the vulnerability that comes with exposing our true self? What is that fear? Is it learned? Instinct? Maybe this is a conversation beyond the scope of an Instagram feed, but it’s been on my mind. Here’s the thing: I made this photo in Ecuador during a personally desperate time. In my memory it depicts a feeling of solitude. I recall it feeling lonely. Needy. As I am looking at it today though, I see confidence. An ease. Peaceful swagger. There’s nothing hopeless about it. Funny how our level of ‘quiet desperation’ effects our perception. .. Sing your songs, my friends.
